I have a bit of an obsession with starting on new worlds on LoU, so I thought I'd recount my first week on my newest server, World 40. This is a quasi-guide to the first week, although I make no claims that my technique is the best.
Update: I did have graphs in this post, but I seem to have lost them at some point. I don't the text is quite as interesting without the graphs, but I'll leave it up anyway.
Day 1
I started pretty much as soon as the server opened. I used LoU Optimiser to design the city. I didn't get a great setup of initial nodes so I had to tweak the balance a little to end up with a layout that gave me 18.8k/hr wood, 24.3/hr stone, 13.7/hr iron, 11.2/hr food, 7.6/hr gold and 2000% CS. Then I followed the tutorial, placing buildings according to my layout. In total that took about 20 minutes, at the end of which I had a score of 50 and was ranked 12th in the world.
I then concentrated on increasing my wood and stone production, construction speed and storage capacity, placing as many of those buildings as I could according to my layout, then using LoU Tweak to upgrade them equally. When I ran out of resources I demolished a resource node that needed to go for my final layout and then went back to upgrading after 2 hours.
8 hours in, I'd dropped back to 36th place, but I was ready to upgrade my town hall to level 5 and within an hour I was back up to 12th place. After another 5 hours of levelling woodcutters huts, quarries and cottages, I'd moved up to 8th place, but I was ready to go to bed, so I queued up a bunch of resource node destructions and left the game for the night.
Day 2
I dropped back to 26th place overnight, but I had a nice pool of resources to keep me upgrading. I was able to upgrade my town hall to level 7 during the day, and by the time I called it a night I was up to 11th place and was able to queue my moonglow tower up to level 6 overnight.
Day 3
Because I'd had a decent queue to start the night off, I only dropped back to 16th place while I was asleep. I spent the day concentrating on resources and then queued my moonglow tower up to level 8 overnight. At around 2pm I used the medallions that I'd built up from quests, since I was doing well resource-wise.
Day 4
I dropped back again to 24th place overnight, and only managed to claw back a few places during the day. Today was another resource-focused day. Because of the free building minister, I was able to queue up not only the rest of my moonglow tower overnight, but a full night's worth of queue.
Day 5
The building minister kept me steady at 21st place overnight. I had to go out during the day, so I queued up my level 8 town hall as well as some resource buildings -- at this point I started working on iron, food and gold so that I would be able to do some research. The town hall upgrade and the large number of low level upgrades brought me up to 12th place by the time I went to bed.
Day 6
With the resources I earned overnight I was able to upgrade my town hall to level 9. I continued to work on resources for purification, and worked my way up to 7th place.
Day 7
Today was another resource-focused day, with my ranking hovering around 12th place.
Day 8
By the time I woke up, I had enough resources for my first title advancement research. Almost exactly a week in, it was congratulations Earl Snowdrop!
