Dining at Magic Kingdom

Here are my thoughts on the places I ate at in the Magic Kingdom.

Main Street, U.S.A.

Plaza Ice Cream Parlour
There is absolutely no competition - my favourite DDP snack on the whole trip was the Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich here. This is not a pre-packaged ice-cream; it's freshly made with two big chewy choc chip cookies with a huge scoop of ice-cream in the middle (you could choose the ice-cream flavour but I went with plain vanilla). It was a little messy to eat but so so good. My biggest regret about the trip is that I never had a second one.

Liberty Square

Sleepy Hollow
This small counter service location specialises in waffles. I had the Nutella and fruit waffle sandwich. It was basically a large waffle spread with lots of Nutella and then piled with strawberries and banana. It was a little difficult to eat but I eventually settled on eating some of the fruit and then folding the waffle in half. While some of the options here are snacks on the DDP, the waffle sandwiches must be paid for out of pocket.

Columbia Harbour House
I had the grilled salmon here. It was nice although quite well-done compared to how I prefer my salmon. It came with couscous which had a small amount of vegetables mixed through and was very nice, as well as a huge serving of broccoli. I wish that more quick-service restaurants served mixed vegetables as a side rather than a giant portion of just one vegetable. But otherwise it was a nice meal. For dessert I had peach cobbler which was okay but not great. For my drink I had an Iced Mocha, which would have been nice with about half the sugar. There was a bit of a queue to order but there was plenty of seating upstairs and it's quite a nice restaurant to eat at.

Fantasyland

The Friar's Nook
This small counter service restaurant specialises in macaroni cheese. I had the pot roast macaroni cheese, which was basically a big bowl of macaroni cheese with some meat on top. It was a nice option for a small meal, although I think it would have been better in cold weather, especially since the seating was all outside. The restaurant took DDP but it wouldn't be very good value - I paid out of pocket.

Be Our Guest
Beauty and the Beast was one of my favourite movies as a kid so this restaurant was a high priority for me. Since breakfast and lunch are also decent value meals on the DDP I ended up eating breakfast, lunch and dinner here. All three meals require an ADR. It was fairly easy to get a lunch ADR at 180 days out and I grabbed a breakfast ADR as soon as the previous "trial" of breakfast was extended with no problem. Dinner was a little more difficult to get an ADR for but I kept trying and eventually scored one.

I pre-ordered both breakfast and lunch, but while pre-ordering at lunch let me skip the line, at breakfast I had to wait in the same line as people who hadn't ordered. In both cases once I got into the restaurant I chose my own table and the waiter with my food found me through my magic band.

For breakfast I had the Eggs Florentine. It was nice although there was quite a lot of pastry compared to the other components (in general I thought the breakfast menu was very bread and pastry heavy, especially given that all meals also came with a selection of pastries). We were given a plate of six pastries between two of us - I kept most of them to have for subsequent breakfasts. For my drink I had a coffee - all of the drinks except the bottled water and chocolate milk were self-service so there wasn't really anything stopping me from having juice as well, but I stuck to water. I'm not sure I would pay out-of-pocket here (especially since there is no option to order a la carte) but it was a nice meal on the DDP, plus it put us right at the front of the pack to ride Seven Dwarfs Mine Train when the park opened.

For lunch I had the Tuna Niçoise Salad. My only complaint was that the menu described it as "Warm seared tuna" but it was served cold - I'm not sure whether it was intended to be served cold or if it was just cold by the time it got to me. Otherwise it was a really nice option for Quick Service lunch. For dessert I had the orange eclair which was very nice. When I initially pre-ordered I chose bottled orange juice as my drink, but at some point they changed the juice to self-service instead. The self-serve juice wasn't quite as nice as bottled but I was able to have as much of it as I wanted.

Dinner is a regular Table Service meal and does not allow pre-ordering. I had the chicken which was nice. For dessert I had to try the grey stuff. I really enjoyed the actual grey stuff but the chocolate base it was served on was very average. Dinner isn't a character meal as such but every so often the Beast walked through the restaurant and then did a meet and greet in a separate room. We didn't bother up lining to meet him. I found the service to be quite slow at dinner - we had two courses and didn't meet the Beast but still spent an hour and a half at the restaurant.

Gaston's Tavern
The theming in this quick service restaurant is amazing, but the menu is fairly limited. I just dropped by for a LeFou's Brew (snack on the DDP), which is exactly the same drink as Red's Apple Freeze in Cars Land at Disney California Adventure. Like I said in my review there, I'm not a huge fan of the taste of the foam (although it does look nice), but I love the apple/marshmallow flavour.

Tomorrowland

Cosmic Rays
I had planned to get the chicken and ribs combo meal here because it's excellent value on the DDP but they ran out of chicken just as I got to the register so they offered me double ribs instead. It was very yummy but was more than I could eat on my own - this would have been a good option to split between two people. It came with mashed potatoes and green beans, and I also got some salad from the toppings bar. For dessert I had the chocolate cake (which I took back to the hotel for breakfast the next day) - the frosting was nice but the cake part was very average. For my drink I had an Iced French Vanilla, which, like the Iced Mocha had way too much sugar for me.
